Art Lovers Escape at the Space Coast
You don’t have to be an art aficionado to recognize that the art scene on Florida’s Space Coast is truly out of this world. Bad puns aside, whether you’re seeking an artistic awakening, or you just want to look at something a bit more refined than the macaroni art currently hanging on your fridge, the following are the best places and events to get your cultural fill.
The Eau Gallie Arts District
Known as the “cultural heart of the Space Coast,” the award-winning Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) is a can’t-miss destination for every art lover. The district includes the Foosaner Art Museum and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra headquarters, in addition to art galleries and studios, artist boutiques, shops, restaurants and a craft brewery. And you’ll want to make sure to mark your calendar for the ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Festival, taking place Nov. 19 - 20, and featuring live demonstrations from the participating artists.
Foosaner Art Museum
The mission of the Foosaner Art Museum, located at 1463 Highland Ave., in Melbourne, is to stimulate thought, inspire creativity and enrich the community by offering diverse visual art exhibitions and relevant educational programs, and it delivers on all points. And you’ve got to love the free admission. Plus, if you’re feeling particularly inspired, the museum offers a wide variety of classes for all experience levels. Museum hours are Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Cocoa Beach Art Show
Once you’ve wrapped up Turkey Day, wobble over to downtown Cocoa Beach for the Cocoa Beach Art Show & Music Fest, which runs from Nov. 25 to Nov. 27. Browse original artwork from local and national artists, listen to live music, and — if you have room — chow down on festival fare. The show kicks off Friday with a street party, and admission is free for the entire weekend.
Art Gallery of Viera
The Art Gallery of Viera, located at 2261 Town Center Ave., is a fine art gallery comprised of Brevard County artists, many of whom are nationally and internationally renowned. In addition to the diverse collection of art, the gallery also features an Art Education Center, offering classes for budding artists of all ages.
Cocoa Village’s Annual Art & Craft Holiday Bazaar
Get your holiday shopping done early at Historic Cocoa Village’s Annual Art & Craft Holiday Bazaar, Dec. 3 through Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Featuring unique art and handcrafted items, you’re guaranteed to find something for everyone on your gift list. Your only challenge will be refraining from blowing your gift budget on yourself!
Local Surf Artists
Make sure to leave time in your itinerary to check out Cocoa Beach’s local surf artists.
Mark Longenecker, tattoo artist and owner of Endless Summer Tattoo, 210 N. Atlantic Ave., is known for his “tropistyle” work. Clients travel from across the country to get inked by Mark, who officially reached local celebrity status after placing fourth on the reality television show Inkmaster.
Rick Piper, owner of BIG ART Studios, 18 N. Brevard Ave., is a mainstay on the local art scene, and a strong advocate for Cocoa Beach artists. His vibrant beach scenes have the power to transport you long after you’ve returned home.
Bruce Best, owner of Nui Tiki Studio, 249 Minutemen Causeway, creates one-of-a-kind tikis and beach art. Even if you don’t make it to his store, you’ll likely end up posing for a selfie next to one of his many tikis located throughout Cocoa Beach.
