5 Unique Ways to Spend Your Summer on Florida’s Space Coast

Something new for your summer vacation

As you start to gear up for your summer vacation, who doesn’t automatically think about heading to the beach to splash in the ocean and catch some rays? But finding new and unique ways to spend your summer doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Florida’s Space Coast makes it easy to find those one-of-a-kind experiences and it’s not just at Ron Jon Surf Shop.

Here are five ways to bring something new to your summer vacation:

1. Sea Turtle Walk

If you have ever visited one of the Space Coast beaches, it’s more than likely you’ve seen yellow signs warning you to watch out for turtle nests. Yet, the likelihood of actually seeing one of these turtles hatch is slim to none during the day.  Make plan to take a Sea Turtle Walk with the one of the organizations that take groups out to witness this marvel.

Providing excursions to the public to observe nesting sea turtles, these walks include an educational presentation about Florida’s sea turtles that nest in the area, the threats they encounter, and how you can help keep them safe prior to going out to observe them in their natural habitat. This is a great experience for any and all ages to enjoy. The best time for a sea turtle walk is between the months of May and October.

2. 50th Anniversary Celebration of Apollo 11

This year, Florida’s Space Coast is celebrating and honoring the accomplishments of the past while looking forward with anticipation to the future of the space program. This July marks 50 years since Apollo 11 took flight, so to commemorate such a historic event, Kennedy Space Center and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation are hosting a weeklong event to remember space history’s past, present and future. 3. Bioluminescence

Be the conductor of your very own light show on the water. With every stroke of the paddle, watch a magical illumination take place as organisms partake in a chemical reaction in their glowing abdomens. By booking a bioluminescence tour with one of the area’s guides, you’ll get to witness this little-known phenomenon.

Occurring during the summer months, the best viewing times are between July and September, so you’ll want to consider that as you plan for your time away. Pictures and videos do not fully capture what you can experience in person. Bioluminescence is something that anyone can enjoy and there are plenty of options on how you can experience this natural phenomenon that will leave you mesmerized for sure.

4. Brevard Zoo

Recently named one of the top zoos in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, Brevard Zoo offers an interactive encounter that brings wildlife adventures up close in a fun and inspirational environment. Paddle alongside the giraffes, zebras, impalas, and more with a kayak adventure tour. And if that isn’t enough, and you want more physical activity coupled with critical thinking and team building exercises, then you’ll want to add the Treetop Trek to your day at the zoo. Treetop Trek is a self-guided adventure park that takes you on a zip-line tour through the zoo. With adventures available for as young as 4-years-old to expert challenge courses, this is a great way to have fun with the whole family.

5. Sebastian Inlet

Besides Cocoa Beach, another one of the Space Coast’s famous spots is Sebastian Inlet. The Sebastian Inlet State Park is located within a gorgeous barrier island along the coast where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Indian River Lagoon. The tide pool is unlike any other too. This provides the perfect setting for anyone, of any age, no matter what outdoor interest they prefer, to have a great time. From fishing and surfing to guided kayak tours, there is a one-of-a-kind experience just waiting for you. And if you prefer to be inside, there are indoor activities that you can experience as well with the two on-site museums.
