3 Way to Make the Most of Surfing Santas
Santa Claus is coming to town, surfer style.
Forget about the sleigh and reindeer, Santa is putting on his wetsuit to get barreled and bring a jolly ol’ good time to Florida’s Space Coast. Cocoa Beach, home to the waves that pro surfers like Kelly Slater and the Hobgood brothers made a name for themselves, is the place to be the morning of Christmas Eve. Why? The 10th annual Surfing Santas is happening and you won’t want to miss it.
This event is a local favorite because it’s a great way to spend time with your friends and family all while supporting a good cause. Plus, it’s an excuse to wear your best Christmas outfit or costume along with over 600 others who have headed to the beach for this holiday tradition. Taking place at the end of Minutemen Causeway, you’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to find parking. There are several public parking options and there may be a few private lots for a fee, so make sure you bring some cash.
Here are three ways to make the most out of Surfing Santas this year:
1. Come Prepared
Enjoy a beautiful day at the beach like normal, so make sure you bring beach chairs, towels, snacks, umbrellas, sunscreen, and anything else that would prep you for a day at the beach. If you don’t want to pack ahead for food, leave a little early and stop by Juice N Java or Coconuts for some grub to-go.
Now this will be a busier day, so make sure you get a good night’s rest so that you stay jolly, patient, and full of holiday cheer. And if you want to be a part of the action, bring your board and definitely make sure you’ve dressed in your holiday attire. The event organizers will give you the cue as to when you can head into the water to sleigh your way into Christmas Day.
2. Costume Contest
As already mentioned, this event is one that highly encourages dressing up, but in your best festive holiday costume! Whether you plan to surf or not, the great thing about this family-friendly event is that there is something for everyone that attends and the more people that deck the halls…or beach...the better.
Plus, there is a chance to win prizes! There will be five (5) categories – babies (0-3), kids (4-15), group (2 people or more), men (16+), and women (16+). So, get your costume ready now or be creative and dress up in your favorite winter/holiday outfit and join in with the other Santas, snowmen, gingerbread men, reindeer, elves, and who knows what else.
3. Support the Causes
Surfing Santas supports two local non-profits: The Florida Surf Museum and Grind for Life. The Florida Surf Museum preserves and documents the unique history and culture of Florida surfing and helps keep the traditions alive here on the Space Coast. Grind for Life provides financial assistance to cancer patients and their families when traveling long distances for doctor appointments and hospital visits, as well as education and inspiration regarding cancer survival and recovery.
Since the events inception in 2009, Surfing Santas has raised over $60,000. You can help support these two organizations by purchasing an . All the proceeds from the shirt sales and any donations go towards supporting these two organizations. What a great way to spread holiday cheer!
