How to Go Car-Free in Cocoa Beach

Car-free is Carefree in Cocoa Beach

When you visit Florida’s Space Coast, you’re looking for a stress-free escape. Unfortunately for many travelers, getting behind the wheel in an unfamiliar community can add stress to your vacation. Thankfully, Cocoa Beach is one of the best cities on the Space Coast to go car-free! With attractions, restaurants, shopping, and neighboring cities so close together, it’s entirely possible for you to ditch the car this vacation.

Cocoa Beach is a hot spot for beach getaways, first-class dining, and family-friendly activities all in (almost) 5 square-miles. No matter if your car-free motivation comes from reducing stress, caring for the environment, or just from wanting to explore Cocoa Beach without checking a Google map, there are plenty of ways you can be carefree while car-free on your next Space Coast vacation.

Hotel Shuttles Get You There

Before you get to town, check with your Cocoa Beach hotel to discover if they have a shuttle program. Many in the area offer free shuttle services to collect their guests from the airport and cruise ports. All you need to do is book it during your reservation. Even better, many hotel shuttles take guests to the area’s top attractions free of charge!

Bike your way through Cocoa Beach

Cocoa Beach Bike Share is a Zagster bike program where you can pick up bikes throughout Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral to explore the area. For a small fee of $3 per hour, you can pedal your way through Cocoa Beach, stopping by local shops and grabbing quick bites to eat, while enjoying the scenery and hidden gems. Pick up and drop off of the Zagster bikes are scheduled through your smartphone app and at designated Space Coast stations. Understand that these road bikes are not suited for beach cruising, and that each rider will need to have their own app to access the bike share program.

If you’d like to take a beach cruise and have access to several styles of cycles for your entire family, head over to A1A Beach Rentals. Here you can rent all different types of bikes – and even kayaks, surfboards, beach chairs, and umbrellas - for whatever adventures you plan for the day or entire vacation.

Rideshare Your Way Through Cocoa Beach

Hailing a ride isn’t technically going car-free, but this is a great option when you don’t want to get behind the wheel to get where you’re going.  Local drivers operate at all hours of the day and can give you the inside scoop of the area, like their favorite places to eat and things to do and see. You’ll save on gas and any parking fees, and you can even venture outside Cocoa Beach limits to discover Florida’s Space Coast morning, afternoon, or evening.

Trolley your way through Cocoa Beach

The Space Coast Area Transit bus system will offer a unique ride when you take route no. 9 in the spring of 2020. Visitors will be able to hop on a beach trolley that loops from  Port Canaveral to Ron Jon Surf Shop every hour. Check out the many waterfront restaurants, watch cruise ships head to sea, and check out the Exploration Tower in The Port. Hop off to discover local shops and restaurants and enjoy different parks along the way to Cocoa Beach for a low cost of $1.25 per ride. Not only will this provide an inexpensive way to get around Cocoa Beach, but it's another great way to be carefree and car-free. Download the Smartphone app here to get access to schedules and other transit news right in the palm of your hand and trolley your way through Cocoa Beach this vacation.

Walk your way through Cocoa Beach

Last, but certainly not least, you can go car-free in Cocoa Beach just by walking. Cocoa Beach is 5 square-miles of fun, which makes it easy to walk along the shoreline and take pit stops along the way to beachfront restaurants and shops. Take a stroll along A1A for access to family attractions like Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures or Lighthouse Cove. Step back in time at The Dinosaur Store and Museum of Ancient Cultures for a grand adventure or the One-of-a-Kind Ron Jon Surf Shop and the Florida Surf Museum or Cocoa Beach Surf Company for all things beach, surf, and souvenirs.

Spending time away on vacation shouldn’t keep you locked up behind the wheel; you should be enjoying a stress-free getaway this time around. From bike rentals to beach trolleys there’s nothing stopping you from experiencing the best of Cocoa Beach.
