It’s one thing to observe nature from afar; it’s another to experience it. Here on Florida’s Space Coast are many trails, parks, and waterways that take you from being just an onlooker to a happy participant. One of the hot spots for experiencing nature here on the Space Coast is in a more northern town known as Titusville.
Titusville has three different bodies of water surrounding it, so there is plenty of nature around every corner. But knowing how to enjoy it depends on your preference. Most visitors fall into one of the following categories. Which one are you? Read on to figure out the best way to explore nature once you’re here.
Interested in nature but not quite ready to spend a full day outside
Sometimes your schedule or the weather doesn’t allow a full day outside. Maybe you aren’t a nature-enthusiast, but want to discover the unique and beautiful areas of Titusville and not sure how to get the most out of your time. Visiting the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary will give you access to where you can experience several different ecosystems from majestic oak hammocks, wet prairies, pine flatwood, and the Atlantic Coastal Ridge in just one short hike.
This designated wildlife sanctuary is also a great place for those of you who enjoy taking your camera wherever you go. With the natural landscape and native wildlife like the white-tailed deer, Florida scrub lizard, gopher tortoises, woodpeckers and a variety of butterflies, there are photo ops everywhere you turn. At the end of your hike, stop by the educational facility where there is an interactive exhibit room, a library, and a gift shop to top off your day outdoors.
Like to be active in nature
For those of you who thrive outdoors, especially when there is something fun to do that keeps you active, you’ll want to check out Titusville’s bike trails like one visitor did. Experience a little bit of history, captivating views, and the natural landscape of the area. Or you can cruise down the Indian River Lagoon with A Day Away Kayak Tours. With many tour options to choose from, you’ll easily be able to reconnect with nature, free yourself from the busyness and routines of life and experience the thrill of adventure, the freedom of nature, and create lifelong memories.
Spend the day relaxing in nature
For some of you, a relaxing day at the beach is how you like to connect with nature and Canaveral National Seashore provides that and more for you. One of the natural wonders of the Space Coast, this park provides undeveloped nature so you get environment in its finest and most natural state. Enjoy soaking up the sun, fishing, swimming, kayaking, or walking around the area to take in all the beauty that is available to you. This is one way to have a relaxing adventure out in nature for the whole day.
Ready to take in a full day of bird watching
Calling all birdwatchers! Titusville is home to the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge traces its beginning to the development of the nation’s Space Program. When NASA built the Kennedy Space Center, most of the area remained undeveloped, so an agreement was signed in order to establish the area as a national wildlife refuge.
This is one of the most diverse estuaries in North America and has been consistently rated as one of the top birding destinations in the United States and rightfully so. The refuge is home to 357 species. So what kind of birds can you see? Keep your eye out for bald eagles, brown pelicans, egrets, ducks, and roseate spoonbills, to name a few. Time flies by as you take in all that there is to see.
Obviously these are general categories of types of people, but it’s easy to take some time outside and explore a little bit. You just never know what awaits you as you take the time and explore what nature has to offer.
