Playtime isn’t just for kids

Fall is here and winter is looming right around the corner, which means the air is a bit chillier and for some of you, this is the time of year where plans to migrate south are just about, if not already, on the horizon. With an average temperature around the mid 70’s, Florida’s Space Coast is a top getaway spot for those of you from up north. Besides the obvious reason to visit in order to escape the cold, did you know that this area is one of the top places to either have a second home or retire to? So for those of you, who are on the cusp of living your best life, keep reading to find out what the Space Coast has to offer and why playtime isn’t just for kids.

Easy Access

First, getting to the pristine beaches and historical downtown areas the Space Coast is known for, there are many options that bring you directly to or provide scenic routes that take less than a day’s drive. For those of you who are jet setters, you will want to choose the Orlando-Melbourne International Airport (MLB) as your destination spot. Flying into Melbourne lands you smack dab in one of the area’s top locations for fine dining and the arts. With direct flights from Atlanta and Philadelphia (coming soon in February 2019), escaping the colder weather has never been easier. Make sure you mark this airport as a favorite for future visits.

For those that prefer traveling by car, taking pit stops along the way, locations that are within a day’s drive go as far north as Charlotte, North Carolina or as west as Mobile, Alabama. Jacksonville, Tampa, Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami are within 3-4 hours, so getting to the Space Coast is a lot easier than people realize. And as you drive through the traffic of the cities just mentioned, you’ll find another reason why this area is a great place to getaway because it’s always like summertime here, where the living is easy.

Great Selection of Accommodations

Second, finding the right accommodations for your stay here all depends on the kind of environment you’re wanting. Waking up to the sounds of the waves washing up on the shore, or maybe a cozy type of cottage in one of the historic downtown areas, or say you need to have access to the business corridor for a few last minute deals that were on the table before you skipped town, no matter what or where you fancy, there is a place for you, from small boutique properties, bed and breakfast options, and top hotel chains.

Endless Opportunities for Fun

Last, the Space Coast has so much to discover in the 72-mile stretch that make up the area. From the north to the south, from the east to the west, experiencing the beauty this area has to offer is around every corner. Whether looking for a spot to catch up on a good book, outdoors activities to maintain your youthfulness, or wanting to wine and dine with your special someone or others, there are plenty of things to do while you are in town.

Here is a list of some ways to enjoy the area:

- Guided tour at the Botanical Gardens

Enjoy the outdoors with a self-guided tour that will give you a walk to remember as you take in the natural beauty of the Space Coast. The Botanical Garden at FIT hosts a trail that leads you along a stream bordered by a shady hammock of palm trees and other tropical plant growth all located through the heart of the Florida Institute of Technology’s campus. This is truly a unique botanical garden.

- Beach it up

You can’t come to the Space Coast without spending a day or more on the beautiful and famous beaches. From running and leisurely strolls along the coastline, to biking the nature trails and pathways that are beachside, waking up and starting the day with the fresh sea air and light tropical breeze across your face is why so many people either visit the area or call it home.  And for all you early risers, set your alarm, grab a cup of coffee and take in a Space Coast sunrise as part of your morning. The choice is yours and what suits your fancy.

- Fishing for the big catch of the day

Hook your own “catch of the day” by spending time on the water as you go on the hunt for the perfect fish for dinner. You can expect to catch redfish, sea trout, possibly black drum, Spanish mackerel, jacks, snook and bluefish throughout the year. Enjoy offshore fishing with one of the local fishing charters where you can feel like a pro and get help from some of the best. If you prefer to stay closer to shore and want a go at hooking Florida bass then check out Haulin Bass Guide. You’ll be taught by some of the best all while having a great time on the water.

- Shopping in Downtown Melbourne

Historic Downtown Melbourne, a little known pleasantry to our beach visitors, has become one of the Space Coast’s top places for shopping and unique buys. It is a great little escape from the beach without having to go too far. An easy drive from the beaches along the south part of the coast, Historic Downtown Melbourne is worth spending the whole day perusing the quaint shops and also enjoying the newly added wall art murals that line the streets.

- Dining at Djon’s

Looking to splurge on a fine dining experience? Check out Djon's in Melbourne Beach. Rated one of the finest restaurants on the Space Coast, Djon’s couples a formal dining experience serving haute cuisine of tender steaks, lamb chops, and fresh seafood in an open environment, both inside and out. Sit at the piano bar for an up close and personal live music experience or take it to the floor to dance with your special someone.

- A day out with the grandkids

Whether you are making your visit a weekend getaway or spending the winter months with us, having a place to make and capture memories with your kids and grandkids is another reason why the Space Coast is well-rounded in what it has to offer visitors no matter the age. The Brevard Zoo is a top spot for families. Hosting not only a beautiful landscape to leisurely walk around to view exotic animals, there are also excursions and adventure courses that you can go on with your grandkids that will make you their most favorite grandparents ever.

Want to make memories on the water instead, where you can catch a beautiful sunset, go dolphin or manatee watching, go tubing, or teach your grandkids the fun of fishing? You’ll want to contact Hayley’s Boat Rentals. With a fleet consisting of pontoon boats, jet skis, and fishing boats, Hayley’s premier boat club has the right watercraft for you and can even help you map out a day on the water.

So start planning your holiday to the Space Coast now. The time between the beginning of October and Thanksgiving is optimum if you want to visit without an influx of visitors and are short on time. And for those of you who have more flexibility in your schedule and can stay for a few weeks or even months, enjoy the break from the cold as you live your best life here on the Space Coast.
