Learning has never been more fun

The holidays have passed and you’ve gotten back into the routine of early morning wake ups, packing lunches, making sure homework is completed, and balancing out extracurricular activities. And we bet you’re already looking for the next opportunity to get away from it all.

Good news! In just a couple of months, the cold air will start warming, daylight will last longer, which means spring will be here before you know it. Here on Florida’s Space Coast, coupling a relaxing getaway with fun, educational activities for your student is easier than ever. Best of all they won’t even realize they are learning while having fun in the sun. Doesn’t that make you want to breathe in deep and let out a sigh of relief?

Here are a few places to add to your spring getaway to Cocoa Beach that won’t disappoint:

Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier

A true central Florida landmark, the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier was built in 1962 and has become one of the top places to stop and spend the day at. It’s a one-stop beach spot where you can stay full and hydrated with your drink of choice from several restaurants to choose from, shop ‘til you drop at the souvenir gift shop, and get your game on with a fun volleyball competition with the sand court available.

And when you’re done, be like a local and just shower off the salty sea water and sand and head down the pier to the Rikki Tiki Tavern. This bar and restaurant extends 800 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, providing you with panoramic views of the ocean as the backdrop to your photos. Hint hint…this would make for great senior pictures if you have a child that is graduating this year.

Historic Cocoa Village Splash Pad & Riverfront Park

If you’re looking for a place to cool off without getting all sandy, then the Cocoa Village Splash Pad and Riverfront Park is the place for you. Not only can you set up a picnic in the open grassy area, cool off in the splash pad overlooking the Indian River Lagoon, you have access to a host of restaurants and quaint unique shops all within an eclectic setting surrounded by giant shady oak trees. This is also a great place to take a historic walking tour, which would be a great way to add an educational experience to your getaway.

Cocoa Beach Bike Share

One way to get the most out of your time in Cocoa Beach is pedaling your way around town. Recently, Florida’s Space Coast partnered up with Zagster Bike Share to bring a fun, flexible, and efficient way to see all that Cocoa Beach has to offer. Not only will you get your workout in, you’ll be able to access trails and other hidden gems. This bike share has minimal fees and gives you the opportunity to create your own adventure along the coast.

Now if you want to ensure that this truly is an educational trip, then you will want to consider adding the following attractions and experiences to your schedule:

History and Culture

The Dinosaur Store: This isn’t your typical fossil store. The Museum of Dinosaurs gives your student the opportunity to explore the prehistoric age to King Tut’s tomb and ancient Egypt. There is also an interactive Adventure Zone that transforms you into an archaeologist for the day with fossil digs and has you braving the rapids of the Nile River without you even getting wet. This is a sure way to create a memorable educational experience for your student.

Math and Science (STEM)

Kennedy Space Center: Well-known for providing a rich history of space flight and scientific research information, Kennedy Space Center also provides an interactive experience called “Salute to Science” and is great for overall STEM education. They are currently offering a special home school experience where you get to come face-to-face with the Space Shuttle Atlantis. And if you want to make it a multi-day experience, check out their Astronaut Training Program, which takes you to mission control where you perform a real space shuttle mission and get to meet a veteran astronaut.

Physical Education

Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures

A self-guided adventure park where you get to enjoy a bird’s eye view by suspending yourself in the air on 45-foot poles as you navigate your way through 50 unique challenges set in a canopy of beautiful live oak trees. There are three different trails and levels of difficulty, and you get to choose which challenges you feel comfortable with completing. All ages, skill level, and strengths will enjoy this unforgettable opportunity.
