Florida’s Space Coast is much more than just the place for space. This 72-mile stretch on the East Coast of Florida is full of gorgeous beaches and expansive waterways. The unique landscape provides a beautiful retreat that is often a welcome contrast to the commercial attractions 45 minutes west of here.

What's even better is that many of the Space Coast's best features are free! Here are some suggestions to ease some expenses:

Spend a Day at the Beach

Spending time with loved ones while sitting on the beach chair, listening to music and watching the waves roll in will help you not only decompress but help you sleep better too. Unplugging will never have more meaning than when you're at the beach.

Throughout Florida’s Space Coast, you will discover dozens of beach hideaways where you can spend a day relaxing in the sun and surf. Some beach access points have restaurants and bathrooms nearby, while others offer more privacy and authentic scenery. Some of the more scenic beaches to try are Canaveral National Seashore, Canova Beach, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach.

Keep in mind that some beach access points do charge for parking, but don’t worry, there are many that do not.

Get a Taste of the Space Coast Culture

Florida’s Space Coast’s culture is full of charming downtown districts, beautiful riverfront parks and a rich history to discover. And that’s just the beginning!

This area is home to five downtown districts – Titusville, Cocoa Village, Cocoa Beach, Eau Gallie Arts District, and Melbourne. Each one is a little different from the other, yet they all are hip centers of shopping, dining and entertainment.

Visit the Space Walk of Fame at Space View Park in Downtown Titusville, which has monuments honoring Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and the Space Shuttle space programs. The Riverfront Park in Cocoa Village is a local’s favorite for its waterfront views and amenities like the splash pad and playground. Downtown Cocoa Beach has many shops to window shop if you’re not looking to spend money, and it also provides direct beach access. EGAD (Eau Gallie Arts District) is a vibrant art district with many wall murals to view including the Shark Toof mural. Downtown Melbourne’s Friday Fest takes place on the second Friday every month and features live music, a kids’ zone and much more.

Explore Your Wild Side

The abundance of wetlands, sanctuaries and parks throughout the Space Coast provides a treasure trove of opportunities where you can view the wonders of nature as well as some local inhabitants.

Viera Wetlands is a popular site for birdwatchers, photographers and eco-tourists because of the area's stunning views and its abundance of wildlife. The wetlands are also a haven for Florida wildflowers, particularly around the central lake perimeter, which has been seeded with local species.

The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge consists of 140,000 acres providing a habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. Recreational opportunities are offered at the refuge from manatee and bird watching to fishing and hunting. The refuge also has dog-friendly trails and is located minutes from Downtown Titusville.

The Barrier Island Sanctuary is a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else on the Space Coast. This hands-on educational venue allows visitors to be educated on sea turtles and the Space Coast’s natural habitats through interactive exhibits, nature films and a 1-mile long dune-to-lagoon nature trail.
