2013 marks the 500th anniversary of Ponce de Leon's landing on Florida's East Coast. As you can guess the entire state is geared up with celebrations to mark the momentous occasion. Already on Florida's Space Coast there have been re-enactments and even a costume party hosted by the Brevard Zoo.
But the most anticipated event is the arrival of El Galeon May 1-2, 2013. The replica of a 16th Century Spanish galleon is currently on tour and will debut in four locations during its stopover in Florida. The 170 foot, 495 ton, authentic wooden replica is following a similar path taken by the Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon 500 years ago. Despite being a working exhibit, the sailing vessel will also contain other artifacts and displays pertaining to Florida's history.
