“I Dream of Jeannie” Barbara Eden Live on the Space Coast
When President Kennedy started to push for the U.S. space program in 1961, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral started to gain more recognition on a national level with people starting to want to visit the Space Coast. All eyes looked to the area when Alan Shepard launched into space, ultimately heating up the space race and America’s love affair for all things space. And by the peak of the Gemini Program in 1965, a new American sitcom set at Cape Kennedy (now known as Cape Canaveral) made its way into living rooms across the nation.
“I Dream of Jeannie” starring Barbara Eden told the story of a genie and an astronaut who becomes her master. The 1960s sitcom ran for five seasons and by the end of the show, Jeannie and Tony marry. Although filming did not take place on the Space Coast, the show was set in and around Cape Canaveral with their residency set in Cocoa Beach.
This September marks the 50th anniversary of the iconic show, and Barbara Eden is returning to the Space Coast to celebrate. On Sunday, October 25, 2015, guests can see Barbara Eden Live on the Space Coast at the “On the Magic Carpet with Barbara Eden” show. Guests will be taken back into Jeannie’s Magic Bottle in a fun-filled evening of storytelling and the screening of rare, never before seen film clips featuring Barbara Eden and stars like Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, and “I Dream of Jeannie” co-star Larry Hagman. In addition to a limited meet and greet reception, guests will have a chance to interact with Barbara in a lively Q & A session.
This show marks Barbara’s first trip back to the area in several years. In fact, she visited in 1996 and was presented with the “I Dream of Jeannie Lane” street sign, which is located near Lori Wilson Park in Cocoa Beach. On the morning of her show, Barbara is scheduled to make an appearance at the awards ceremony for the sold out inaugural Ron Jon Cocoa Beach Half Marathon, which finishes on “I Dream of Jeannie Lane.”
The show and Ms. Eden’s appearance are largely made possible due in part to the support of SCB Marketing and the Brevard County Tourist Development Council’s Special Event Marketing Grant Program, and the Space Coast Office of Tourism, all hoping to bring more visitors to the Space Coast.
